HEA, HEB and HEM Beam Dimensions and Weight Tables (EN 10365)
Published November 2026 · 8 min read · Technical Reference · Structural Steel
HEA, HEB and HEM are the European wide-flange H-beams used for columns, heavy beams, crane runways and industrial frames. This page gives the complete dimension and weight tables for all three series from size 100 to 1000, with the section properties engineers need most. It also includes a weight calculator and a checklist for ordering H-beams from a mill.
• HEA = light series (thinner flanges, lowest weight). HEB = standard series. HEM = heavy series (thickest flanges and web).
• Dimensions: EN 10365 (formerly DIN 1025-2, -3, -4). Tolerances: EN 10034. Steel grades: EN 10025-2 (S235JR, S275JR, S355J2).
• Most common sizes: HEA 200 = 42.3 kg/m, HEB 200 = 61.3 kg/m, HEB 300 = 117 kg/m.
• Customs code: H sections of 80 mm or more in height fall under HS 7216.33.
What Are HEA, HEB and HEM Beams?
All three are hot-rolled I-sections with parallel flanges that are as wide as, or close to, the section height. That wide flange gives them good stiffness about both axes, which is why they are the first choice for columns and heavily loaded beams. The series differ in flange and web thickness:
| Series | Also known as | Old standard | Characteristics | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HEA | IPBl, HE-A, "H profile light" | DIN 1025-3 | Thinner flanges, height slightly less than nominal size | Beams and columns where weight matters: industrial halls, mezzanines, frames |
| HEB | IPB, HE-B | DIN 1025-2 | Height equals nominal size up to 300, standard flange thickness | Columns, crane girders, heavy floor beams, foundations |
| HEM | IPBv, HE-M | DIN 1025-4 | Very thick flanges and web, height above nominal size | Heavy columns, piles, bridge and offshore structures, high point loads |
The designation shows the series and the nominal size in millimetres. An HEA 300 is 290 mm high, an HEB 300 is 300 mm high, and an HEM 300 is 340 mm high. The flanges are 300 mm, 300 mm and 310 mm wide respectively. Always check the actual height in the tables below when you detail connections.

Theoretical weight based on a steel density of 7,850 kg/m³. Actual delivered weight can differ slightly because of rolling tolerances.

Dimensions and weights according to EN 10365. Section properties are calculated from the nominal dimensions, including root radii, and may differ from individual mill catalogues by less than 1% because of rounding. Use the mill's data for final design.
HEA vs HEB: Which One Should You Use?
For the same nominal size, an HEB is about 15–45% heavier than an HEA (the gap is largest in sizes 160 to 300) and has a correspondingly higher load capacity. Choose by the governing check, not by habit:
- Bending governs (beams): compare Wel,y per kg. Deeper HEA sections or an IPE often carry the same moment with less steel than a shallower HEB.
- Buckling governs (columns): HEB and HEM have a higher weak-axis stiffness (Iz), which matters for slender columns.
- Limited height: when the structural depth is fixed, a heavier series of the same size is the only way to add capacity.
- Connections: thicker flanges in HEB and HEM give more room for bolts and reduce the need for stiffeners.
Steel Grades and Standards for H-Beams
| Grade (EN 10025-2) | Min. yield strength (t ≤ 16 mm) | Typical use | Nearest US grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| S235JR | 235 MPa | General structures, light frames | ASTM A36 (approx.) |
| S275JR | 275 MPa | Standard grade for buildings in many markets | ASTM A36 / A572 Gr. 42 (approx.) |
| S355J2 / S355JR | 355 MPa | Industrial buildings, bridges, crane girders | ASTM A572 Gr. 50 / A992 (approx.) |
Grade equivalents are approximate. Chemical composition, impact testing and thickness limits differ between standards, so confirm the required grade in the project specification. For EU projects that require CE marking under EN 1090, ask for an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate with every delivery.
How to Order HEA and HEB Beams
- Series and size, for example HEB 300. Specify by name, not by height alone, to avoid confusion between series.
- Steel grade, for example S355J2 to EN 10025-2.
- Length: mills usually supply 12 m stock lengths, and longer lengths such as 15 m or 18 m on order. Exact cut lengths can be supplied for a surcharge.
- Quantity in tonnes or pieces. Use the calculator above to convert.
- Certificate: EN 10204 3.1 as standard, 3.2 if your client requires third-party inspection.
- Tolerances: EN 10034, unless the project specifies otherwise.
- Surface: as rolled, shot-blasted and primed, or hot-dip galvanized.
- Processing: cutting, drilling, coping and welding of end plates can be done before shipment.
- Delivery terms and packing: Incoterm, bundle weight limits and marking.
Sourcing H-Beams from Türkiye
Türkiye is one of the largest producers of long steel products in Europe. Most of its steel is made in electric arc furnaces, which gives lower embedded emissions under the EU CBAM. Turkish mills and stockists supply HEA, HEB and IPE sections in all common grades, with 3.1 certificates and CE marking. They can also supply fabricated beams that are cut, drilled and primed to your drawings.
For EU buyers, note that H-sections are in the "angles, shapes and sections" category of the new EU steel import quotas, so plan delivery dates around quarterly quota periods. Fabricated steel structures (HS 7308) are outside the quota categories.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between HEA and HEB?
HEA is the light series and HEB the standard series of European wide-flange beams. For the same nominal size, HEB has thicker flanges and web, a greater height up to size 300, and is about 15–45% heavier, depending on size, with a higher load capacity.
How much does an HEB 200 beam weigh?
An HEB 200 weighs 61.3 kg per metre, so a 12 m beam weighs about 736 kg. An HEA 200 weighs 42.3 kg per metre, or about 508 kg for 12 m.
Which standard defines HEA and HEB dimensions?
Dimensions and section properties are defined in EN 10365, which replaced DIN 1025-2, -3 and -4. Rolling tolerances are covered by EN 10034, and the steel grades by EN 10025-2.
What is the US equivalent of an HEB beam?
The nearest US equivalent is a W-shape (wide flange) to ASTM A6, but the dimensions are not identical. For example, an HEB 300 is close to a W12×79 in size and weight. Always check the section properties, not just the name.
What length are HEA and HEB beams supplied in?
The standard stock length is 12 m. Many mills also roll 15 m, 16 m or 18 m lengths to order, and beams can be cut to exact project lengths before shipment.
What is the HS code for HEA and HEB beams?
Hot-rolled H-sections with a height of 80 mm or more are classified under HS 7216.33. Confirm the full national code with your customs broker.
